Essential Phone: Simple is Always Better

--By On June 29, 2017

Android founder Andy Rubin is currently onstage at the Code Conference with the Essential phone. Now, let's catch a glimpse of the phone. Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, 4GB RAM, 128GB of internal storage, 3040mAh battery, a pair of titanium ceramic material body, rear fingerprint recognition and of course that amazing edge-to-edge display. Actually, the Essential phone has the high-end features that you’d expect. That seems really nice and worth of buying, isn't it?

However, there is something controversial about the front-facing camera. If you look towards the top of the phone, you could find that there’s a cut out in the screen for the front-facing camera, which looks odd. That is such an unexpected design. So far, it is the first time that merging the front camera into the screen. Anyway, it does have a full screen display.

It is also said that the Essential phone supports a dual 13MP rear camera and an 8MP shooter situated at the front (the front camera can also capture 4K videos). And the most exciting is the 360-degree camera, which can shoot a spherical UHD (3840x1920) image at 30 frames per second.

In my opinion, the unique thing about the Essential phone is the ecosystem that it wants to surrounds itself through the use of accessories. It features a magnetic connector and can hook up to the Essential 360-degree camera and Essentials Phone Dock. According to the Essential website, the magnetic connector with wireless data transfer keeps your phone cord-free, future-proof, and always up-to-date.

For the time being, the Essential phone is expected to cost $699 and will only be available in the US. And you could get a 360 degree camera with extra $50. Nevertheless, it is currently taking pre-orders and the delivery/release date is not yet known. Moreover, it will be available in several colors.

Besides, Rubin also revealed that Essential Home and Ambient OS which will show up later. It is reported that "Home" with Ambient OS will be able to control some of the different products from SmartThings, HomeKit, Nest, etc. It also supports amazon's Alexa, apple's Siri and Google Assistant. Moreover, "Home" can be operated by voice control and touch screen. To some extent, the Essential "Home" can be the set of intelligent audio equipment of the current market from its function to design.

It is so exciting that Andy Rubin brings us. However, when Rubin talked about why he founded the Essential company, he said : “When I talked with an old friend of mine one day, we all agreed that there are fewer choice but more unnecessary functions in the current technology product . And that is annoying. While I was about to criticize this I found I am partly responsible for this”.

In fact, Andy Rubin wants everything to be simple. So there is Essential.
